Richard’s sole driver is to help people get ahead by growing wealth, reducing debt, and protecting their families.
“I am here to help you get to where you want to go. It is all about having the right investments in place to accumulate wealth, and the right insurances so that if you get thrown a curve ball, we can help pick up the pieces.”
Richard has been in financial services since 1983, and an adviser since 1990. He helped set up SHARE nationwide in 2008 and has been Chairman of the Board since 2009.
And after all that time he still gets a buzz hearing someone is doing well. He loves to meet people and understand their specific situation. With no two clients the same he wears a different hat for every appointment.
“They come from all walks of life. I go from talking to long-established farming families to new couples buying their first homes. I also work with retirees who still have investment funds that need to be managed.”
And while no one wants to think the wheels are going to fall off it does happen. Richard says advising people on the right insurances and being there for them during the tough times is often the best part of the job.
“When the worst is happening it is a good feeling to know you can help to make things a bit easier. It is a really tangible part of what we do and the bit where clients can see real value.”
Richard’s growing team is based in Dunedin and serves the Otago/Southland area. “We have got such a fantastic team. They are fierce advocates for their clients, they are loyal, efficient and they care about getting the best outcomes. Quite frankly I would be lost without them!”
Richard enjoys time with family, good food, lots of fun, travel, cycling and walking, and especially Wanaka. He gives back by being on committees and boards in both the community and in the industry.

Jan is Richard’s right hand in the Dunedin office – the voice at the end of the phone our clients have come to expect. She has worked with Richard for 16 years and is passionate about going into bat for our clients to make sure they get the best results.
Jan has spent her career in administration/legal secretariat and practice management and quite frankly, as much as Richard might think he’s the boss, Jan runs the business.
Outside of work, Jan loves spending time with family and friends, is passionate about fitness, and is a competitive runner. She runs in competitive events, and for pleasure. She says she’s not that competitive, but you should ask her husband what happens if he ever beats her in a race!

Sharn specialises in mortgage, insurance, investment and KiwiSaver advice, and is always thinking laterally to get the best results for her clients.
“It is all about listening – really listening to what people want out of life – and then working together to make it happen.
Sharn is focused on building relationships to get results. “It is through doing that I can drill down and help you get where you want to be. Some people come to me for specific help – like insurance or a mortgage – and I can absolutely do that. But for others, we take a step back and look at the bigger picture, because everything in your financial life is connected”.
“We are looking at all the big questions: How will you pay your mortgage if you cannot work? What is the right balance between saving for the future and paying off the mortgage? How much should you be putting aside for your children’s future? How does using KiwiSaver to buy a first home work… and then how do you reset it for retirement?”
After 30 years in the banking industry, transitioning to financial advice was a natural move for Sharn.
“I was always the square peg in a round hole in banking. I did not get the chance to really develop long-term relationships with my clients and I was limited by the products I could recommend. I am a solutions-based person and at SHARE we have the time to truly get to know people, so we can provide the right tailored advice that make a real difference.”
Sharn is part of Richard Thomas’s Dunedin based team. And when she is not at work Sharn loves to spend time with her family and their Spoodle. She enjoys hanging out with friends, listening to podcasts, and has recently added cycling to her list of interests.

Debbie has been an administrator all her career, just like her sister Jackie who is also on our team. Debbie has been in insurance administration for a decade and recently completed Level 5 insurance qualifications.
Like the rest of the team, Debbie really enjoys solving problems, creating solutions for clients and is focused on delivering timely outcomes.
Outside work Debbie enjoys her garden, and spending time with her family and friends. Debbie also loves spending time in Otematata, where she and her family have spent many summers.

Jackie has been in insurance administration since she left high school, which apparently was ages ago!
She has built a career in financial services administration and is our inhouse expert on KiwiSaver and Investments. Jackie loves client interaction and getting stuff done.
Outside of work Jackie enjoys the outdoors and loves finding new spots to spend her many holidays!
She enjoys cycling, the beach and spending time with her friends and family, most of whom she tolerates, but she loves her dogs.

Paula has been in administration and practice management for more than 16 years. Before joining Richard and the team, Paula was a mainstay at Fiona Keenan’s SHARE business.
South Otago born and bred, Paula travelled extensively when she was younger, but always gravitated home again. She enjoys being a professional administrator and likes building rapport with clients and getting to know their families.
Outside of work, Paula enjoys spending time with family and friends, and helping on her partner’s farm.
